myth-or-factWe Disprove Some Common Plumbing Myths

Plumbing is usually something that we ignore in a home, except in the initial inspection some potential buyers may have when looking at a residence and considering it for purchase.

But even when plumbing is working fine, time may change that. That’s why we’re going to look at some of the assumptions and myths people have developed about plumbing, and tell you what’s really going on.

Your Pipes Are Safe From Animalsrats-in-pipes

This is, unfortunately, not true. Because pipes, especially toilet and kitchen sink pipes, must carry away both liquids and solids, there are no barriers or traps in place between your home pipe and the sewer pipe.

This means that animals like mice and rats can—and do—crawl up pipes, especially if a lot of food is disposed of there. In some instances, rodents can make it all the way up a pipe and exit out through the toilet.

A Plunger Is All You Need  For Clogs

Your plunger is your best defense for most clog problems you may experience. That doesn’t mean that it will solve every problem. Depending on the kind of build-up and where the clog is, the plunger, while versatile may not be up to the task, and you’ll need professional help. Always try a plunger first, but never be afraid to get better help when you need it.

Water Heaters Are Explosion Proof

As hard as this may be to believe, it’s actually the opposite. A water heater tank can explode, and the results can be bomb-like. All it takes is damage to the temperature and pressure relief valve, and your water heater can build up forces that will eventually result in an explosion.

If you don’t know where your TPR valve is, or what it looks like, do not tamper with your water heater tank until you do know. You could inadvertently damage it and create your own time bomb.

leaking-faucetIf Your Faucet Leaks, It’s No Big Deal

To be fair, a leaky faucet, all by itself, may not be a big problem. But in medical terms, a leaky faucet is a symptom, like bleeding gums, or a persistent cough.

On its own, these are minor symptoms, but they are your body’s way of trying to warn you that a big problem is on the way. A leaky faucet can sometimes be your first hint of a bigger problem. Addressing it early can prevent that problem from getting expensive.

If Water Is Draining, Everything Is Fineclogged-drains

If water is going down your drain, this means that nothing in your pipes has reached the point where a significant slowing down or block of water has occurred. It does not mean that your pipes are safe, just that they’re not yet acting up.

Waste matter in your pipe could be slowly accumulating, or you may even have a break in your pipe that is sending sewage water into the soil.

You’ll only know for sure once the problem becomes serious, or if you have an expert inspect the condition of your entire plumbing system.
