1. Avoid Taking Baths

A bath requires about 1.3 times as much water as a shower does, so it's best to avoid taking baths frequently. In addition, you should try to limit the time you spend in the shower to 6 minutes or less. You may even want to consider replacing your shower head with a more energy efficient, low flow model, which can save you up to four gallons of water per minute.

2. Turn Off the Water While you Brush your Teeth

You may also want to think about getting a more energy efficient faucet. Newer faucets can save you up to two gallons per minute compared to older models; however, since new faucets can get pricey, you could just replace the aerator and set it to restrict the water flow.

3. Get a New Toilet

The most efficient toilets use only 1.28 gallons of water each time they are flushed. Toilets that were made before 1993 use up to 3.5 gallons each time they are flushed. You can also remove your toilet's tank and put in a dual-flash converter in order to reduce your water usage significantly. Another way to reduce the amount of water your toilet uses is to stick a brick in the water tank. The brick will displace about half a gallon of water, so you will use less water and it will not have an impact on the power of the flush.

4. Only Run your Washer When it is Full

If you must wash a smaller load, be sure to adjust the setting on your washer so you do not use as much water as you would for a fuller load. Newer, front load washing machines typically weigh each load in order to determine how much water needs to be used.

5. Keep an Eye Out for Leaks

Perhaps the biggest reason water is wasted is because of undetected leaks. You can often detect faucet or shower head leaks, but toilet leaks are sometimes harder to notice. If you see that the water in the toilet bowl is creating a rippling effect, you probably have a leak. Most often, these leaks can be fixed by replacing the toilet's flapper valve.

Whether you are dissatisfied with your Colonial Heights water bill or not, it is always a good idea to reduce the amount of water you use. Follow these five tips in order to cut back on your water usage and save yourself some money.
